2.3 Project objective

To enhance my students’
hance my students’ ability in guessing the meanings of the new words while doing reading comprehension.

 

2.4 Project hypothesis

Students’ ability in guessing new words is increased by well training.

 

2.5 The rationale of the project

(1). The role of the students—I would like my students to form a good habit of reading English i.e. to overcome some new words by guessing through referring the given information or some implications in the passage so that they can grasp the main idea of what they’ve read and develop their reading skills.

(2). The role of the teachers—the teacher should play different roles in classroom teaching. I’d like my students not only to regard the teacher as an evaluator but also a helper, director as well as a demonstrator.

(3). The role of the material—the material, which is provided to the student, should be suitable for the students’ level. Best of all, the material can attract the students deeply to read.

3. Unknown words-guessing Design

My hypothesis is students’ ability in guessing new words is increased by well training. I should design some effective and useful activities so that my students can get valuable training.

Week 1 Reading materials (Book V for junior students)

Material 1:

Purpose: to practise grasping some new words by referring to some implications.

Instruction: Students read the story quickly and then guess the given words which are from the context and write the meanings out.

Procedures: First, students read through the story about Beethoven without pausing even if they come across any new words. Second, help the students find out some useful information or implications. Third, get the students to guessing the meanings of the given words according to the implications. Fourth, write the meanings of the new words out.

Demonstration:

Guess the meanings of the underlined words by referring to the implications.

I like to listen to Beethoven. Do you know who he is? Beethoven is one of the famous composers in history. He wrote many pieces of music in his life time.

Beethoven was born in Germany into a musician’s family. His father played the piano and violin. When Beethoven was a little child, he had already started to teach him about music...Beethoven started to compose music early in life. But, when he grew older, he lost his hearing and became deaf. Yet he never stopped working. He gave the world so many beautiful, exciting pieces of music works.

Write out the meanings of the underlined words in the passage.

1. Beethoven___________      2. composer ___________       3. musician ___________  

4. deaf ______________          5. music works_________________
