Material 2:
Purpose: to practise grasping some new words by referring to some implications.
Instruction: Students read the passage quickly and then guess the given words which are from the context and write the meanings out.
Procedures: First, students read through passage without pausing to get the main idea of the passage. Second, find out some useful information or implications about the underlined words. Third, get the students to guessing the meanings of the given words according to the implications. Fourth, write the meanings of the new words out.
Demonstration:
Australia is the biggest island in the world. It has an area of about 7,680,000 square kilometers. Its capital city is Canberra, the third largest city of this island country.
Australia has wonderful animals. The kangaroo and the koala are the most famous. Another animal there that is very interesting is the platypus. A platypus has hair, duck feet and duckbill. It swims in the water and also lays eggs.
The first people to live in Australia are called the Aborigines. The British first went to Australia in 1788. Since that time many people from different countries have moved to Australia to live. So, Australia is a country with many different cultures.
