Unit 15 A famous detective

 

一、教学目标与要求

通过本单元教学,学生领略和感受英国著名作家柯南道尔侦探小说中复杂的情节和神探福尔摩斯的机智勇敢。学生在理解课文的基础上,能运用自己组织的语言复述故事,或以故事中不同人物的角度,描述事情的经过;通过对话课的学习与操练,复习表达良好祝愿的常用语句;学习并初步掌握过去分词作定语和状语的用法;正确完成练习册安排的练习。

二、教学重点与难点

1.重点词汇affair;delay;quarrel;dare;fasten;doubt;strike;blow;scream;have a seat;long before;pay…a visit;in silence;connect to

2.重要句型1)I dare say my uncle will.I have no other relatives.2)Why would a builder make a hole in the wall between two rooms when he could easily make the same hole in an outside wall?3)He examined the red bell rope,the end of which lay upon the pillow of the bed.4)The young lady rushed into the room immediately she heard the noise.5)No doc-tor would have noticed the tiny teeth marks of the snake on your skin.

3.语法 过去分词作定语和状语(The Past Participle as Attribute and Adverbial)

1)There was once a detective named Sherlock Holmes. 2)Well known for his expert ad-vice,he was able to help many people.3)Scientific experiments carried out by students with-out the teacher’s instructions can be dangerous.4)Frightened by the noise in the night,the girl did not dare sleep in her room.

4.日常交际用语表示良好祝愿(Farewells and good wishes)1)I called to tell you that the conference has been delayed until the 15th and 16th.2)I’m afraid I have togo now.It’s time I went and picked up my little girl from school.3)Goodbye,Dr Zhang.I hope you have a good journey back to Guangzhou.4)Thank you verymuch. (一)对话课

 

Ⅰ.教具  录音机、投影仪。

Ⅱ.课堂教学设计

1.教师通过向学生提出以下问题导入本课:1)If you have something that you want to inform somebody,what would you do?(Make a phone call;tell him/her directly;ask some-body to send a message;write to him/her,etc.)2)Just now we talked about some ways that we may choose when we want to tell other people something.Now let’s listen to the di-alogue and see what ways those people use.

2.准备放对话录音。借助投影片打出以下听前提问:1)How many people are talking?2)Where does Dr.Zhangcome from?3)What is the message in the conversation?

放录音一至两遍,请学生回答上述问题,教师予以必要订正。

Key:1)Three people are talking.2)Dr.Zhang comes from Guangzhou.3)The mes-sage is that the conference has been delayed until 15th and 16th.

3.再次放对话录音,学生跟读。将学生分为三人一组练习对话。数分钟后,请两三组同学到前面表演,教师予以讲评。

4.根据本课对话内容和有关情景,教师再提出一些问题,要求学生使用对话中所出现的日常交际用语进行应答。1)If you want the one who is at the door to come in, what would you say?2)If you want to ask someone to sit down,what would you say?3)If you want to introduce somebody to someone else, what would you say?4)If you want to leave,what would you say?5)If you want to express that you feel nice to have met someone,what would you say?6)If you want to say hello to somebody else for you,what would you say?

5.教师指导学生归纳本课中有关表示良好祝愿(Farewells and good wishes)的常用语句(见日常交际用语部分)。要求学生能熟练掌握这些语句,并在编练新的对话时加以运用。

教师提供如下情景,组织学生三人一组编演新的对话:

Situation 1:You are talking with your neighbour.Then a classmate of yours calls on you.He tells you that the whole class will go to a kindergarten to help with the cleaning there.You introduce your classmate to your neighbour.Make a dialogue in your own words.

Situation 2:You pay a visit to your friend and meet with a relative of his from Hainan.You want to take your friend to an exhibition but your friend says sorry to you because he has to go shopping with his relative.Make a dialogue in your own words.

学生也可以自己设计情景,编演新的对话。数分钟后,请一两组同学到前面表演,教师予以讲评。

6.布置作业 1)预习第58课;2)完成练习册中安排的练习。

 

(二)阅读理解课(Ⅰ)

 

Ⅰ.教具  录音机、投影仪。

Ⅱ.课堂教学设计

1.检查生词及短语。

2.教师向学生提出以下问题:1)Do you like reading detective stories?2)Who like read-ing detective stories better in this class,the boys or the girls?3)Have you ever read detective stories about Sherlock Holmes?If not,have you ever heard of him?

3.准备阅读课文,教师给出读前提问:1)What could the young lady often hear at night?2)How did Holmes manage to get into her uncle’s room?

教师给学生数分钟,要求学生快速阅读课文,之后请同学回答上述问题。

Key:1)She could often hear a long low whistle and the sound of a metallic noise at night.2)He opened the door of her uncle’s room with a thin metal wire which he always kept in his pocket.

4.放课文录音,学生跟读一至两遍。

教师用投影仪打出以下statements,要求学生判断其正误,并对错误的statements进行修改。

1)The famous detective Sherlock Holmes helped a great number of people with their personal affairs.He usually found the answer with the help of local police.2)One day a young lady came to visit Holmes because her parents had died and she didn’t know how to deal with the moneyleft for her.3)According to the reading passage,theyounglady’s uncle was the only one to get the moneyleft forher if she died.4)Holmes and his assistant man-aged to pay a visit to the young lady’s house because her uncle was in India during the day-time.5)After a careful examination of the house,Holmes discovered a hole in the outside wall.6)Holmes and his assistant did not find anything unusual and therefore decided to re-main in the young lady’s room for the night to discover more.

5.课堂活动 要求学生根据课文内容,找出对神探福尔摩斯的相关描写:Ask the stu-dents to find out:1)how carefully Holmes observed things in the lady’s house 2)how he asked questions about the things that seemed usual to ordinary people

Ask the students to describe:1)the young lady’s room 2)her uncle’s room

学生先在小组内交流并相互启发,数分钟后,请学生在班上交流,教师和其他同学补充修正。

6.布置作业 1)复述课文;2)完成练习册中所安排的练习。

 

阅读理解课(Ⅱ)

 

Ⅰ.教具  录音机、投影仪。

Ⅱ.课堂教学设计

1.检查学生课文朗读和复述。准备阅读课文第二部分。教师给出读前提问:1)Where did Holmes and Watson go after tea?2)What happened to the young lady’s uncle at the end?教师给学生数分钟,要求学生快速阅读课文,之后请同学回答上述问题。

Key:1)They went up to the young lady’s bedroom.2)The young lady’s uncle was bit-ten by the snake,dead.

2.放课文录音,学生跟读一至两遍。教师用投影仪打出以下statements,要求学生判断其正误,并对错误的statements进行修改。

1)The young lady said good night to her uncle, opened and shut her bedroom door in order to show that she wouldgoto sleep as usual.2)The younglady’s uncleknewthat there were some strangers in the next room.So he gave a low whistle.3)Holmes tried very hard to hit the bell rope with his stick in order to drive the snake back.4)The heavy metal chest had been used bythe young lady’s uncle tokeep his weapons.

4.讨论题:1)Could you explain the use of the box of matches and the thin stick?2)Why did the young lady open and shut her bedroom door without entering? 3) Why did Holmes and Watson sit with the light on for half an hour and then turn off the light?4)Why do you think Holmes hit the bell rope again and again?

学生先在小组内讨论。数分钟后,学生在班上交流。教师不必规定答案,鼓励学生都积极发表自己的看法。

5.布置作业   1)将两课内容结合,讲述这个故事。如有条件,可组织学生排演这个侦探故事;2)完成练习册中所安排的练习。

1.请学生讲述 Noises in the night这个侦探故事。

2.教师从本单无词语中选择部分常用词语,配以例句介绍给学生。要求学生反复练习这些例句,并请同学造句,教师予以讲评、订正。

1)delay v./n.

We decided to delay going on our holidays until next week.

After a delay of half an hour,we continued our journey.

All this must be done without delay.

2)quarrel v./n.

It’s no use quarrelling about it with me.

What was the cause of the quarrel?

3)doubt v./n.

You can write to him if you doubt my word.

She never doubted for a moment that she was right.

I doubt whether/if he will come.

There is no doubt that he is a good teacher.

4)dare

I dare not ask you,because I thought I must be wrong.

How dare you ask me such a question?

If you dare speak to me like that again,you’ll be punished.

He had never dared to go into the woods all by himself.

5)fasten

Have you fastened all the doors and windows?

can not fasten on this button.

He fastened all the pages with a pin.

6)silence

There was complete silence just before the singer started to sing.

The teacher gave the students one look,and they were put to silence.

Can you silence the children so that I can work?

7)blow n./v.

He gave the thief a blow on the head.

For some reason she did not turn up.This was a great blow.

My hat blew off while I was crossing the bridge.

The wind blew away the clothes that were hanging on the line.

3.分角色复述课文。

教师提供不同的角色,由不同学生扮演,从各个角度讲述本篇故事。

Role1:Suppose you were the young lady.tell what happened that night in your own words, using the following words and expressions in your story.

英文提示(用投影片打出):go up;a box of matches;stick;in silence;greet;have din-ner;upstairs;hide in another room;a scream;rush;on the floor,dead;brown snake;open metal chest;drive the snake back;attack its keeper

将首句给出:Mr.Holmes and his assistant went up to my bedroom and waited there.

Model:

Mr.Holmes and his assistant went up my bedroom and waited there.I saw the detec-tive put out a box of matches on the table and lay his stick next to it.I didn’t know why.As soon as they heard my uncle return,they stopped talking and sat in silence.

I greeted my uncle as usual and we had dinner together downstairs.After dinner,I went upstairs and said good night to my uncle.Then I opened my bedroom door and shut it.But I didn’t enter.Very quietly I stole into another small room to hide there.It seemed to me that many hours had passed when I heard a sudden scream.It came from my uncle’s room.I rushed there and saw my uncle on the floor,dead.Around his head was a brown snake.Holmes took the snake with a piece of rope,threw it into the open metal chest and shut it.Then he explained to me what had happened.Now I realized how the snake had been driven back to attack its keeper.Anyhow,I was saved.

Role 2:Suppose you were Dr Watson.Tell the story again.

七八分钟后,请几位同学分角色复述课文,教师予以讲评。

4.课堂活动

要求学生根据课文内容,找出对神探福尔摩斯的相关描写: How quickly and bravely Holmes acted that night.

数分钟后,请几位同学在班上交流,教师和其他同学补充、修正。

5.布置作业   1)预习第16单元;2)完成练习册中安排的练习。

四、难句分析

1.I’ve got some personal affairs that I have to see to.我有些私事非处理不可。

在口语中,常用have/has got代替have。例如:

He’s got a new bicycle.他有辆新自行车。

Have you got any money with you?你身边带钱了吗?

that I have to see to是定语从句,修饰前面的personal affairs。see to意为:处理(某事);负责做某事;照顾(某人)等。例如:

I hope you’ll see to the matter immediately.我希望你能立即处理此事。

Will you see to that customer,please?你来照顾一下这位顾客,好吗?

此外, see to还可以表示“修理;治疗”。例如:

Something has gone wrong with my computer.Could you see to it for me?我的电脑出了点毛病,你能帮我修一下吗?

You ought to have your eyes seen to by a doctor.你应该找医生去治治你的眼睛了。

2.I meant to tell you yesterday,but you were not in your office.我打算昨天告诉你,但你不在办公室。

如果动词mean后面接不定式,意为:有……意图;打算,想。如果后面接动名词,则表示:意味着。例如:

I don’t mean to say we are perfect.我并不是要说我们完美无缺。

I’m sorry,Alice.I didn’t mean to be rude to you.对不起,艾丽丝,我没有对你粗暴的意图。

Farmers won’t accept the plan if it means limiting the number of cattle they have.如果这个计划意味着限制农民所拥有牲畜的数量,他们不会接受。

mean to do有时可以用于过去完成时,表示“本来打算……”。例如:

I had meant to keep it a secret,but many people insisted on my telling them.我本打算保守秘密,但很多人坚持要我告诉他们。

3.It is time I went and picked up my little girl from school.我该去学校接小女儿了。

It is time +从句,从句中的谓语动词要使用虚拟语气,意为:是某人做某事的时候了。该句相当于It’s time for me to go and pick up my little girl from school.这个句型有时也可写作:It is high time +从句,从句中的谓语动词仍使用虚拟语气。例如:

Now,I think it’s time you went to bed.现在该是你去睡觉的时候了。

I thnk it is high time that the headmaster made up his mind.我想现在该是校长下决心的时候了。

4.Well known for his expert advice,he was able to help a great number of people with their personal affairs.他在探案方面的足智多谋是广为人知的,因此,他能够帮助许多人解决他们的私人事务。

句中的well known for his expert advice是过去分词短语,其作用相当于表示原因的状语从句:As he was well known for his expert advice,说明句子中的谓语was able to help…的原因。

过去分词短语用作状语,修饰谓语,表示原因、时间、条件,相当于一个表示原因、时间、条件的状语从句。例如:

Born into a poor family,he had only two years of schooling.(=As he was born into a poor family…)由于出生于贫苦家庭,他只上了两年学。(表示原因)

Seen from the hill,the town looks beautiful.(=When it is seen from the hill…)

从山上往下看,这座城镇很漂亮。(表示时间)

Given better attention,the cabbages could have grown better.(=If they had been given better attention…)如果管理得好一些,这些大白菜还可以长得好一点。(表示条件)

很多时候,过去分词短语作状语,说明谓语动词的背景或情况。例如:

Built in 1192,the bridge is over 800 years old.这座桥是1192年建的,已有800多年历史

5.I dare say my uncle will.I have no other relatives.我想我叔父会(得到这笔钱),我没有其他的亲戚。

I dare say 意为:也许;我想。例如:

I dare say you’re thirsty after all that tennis.打了这么半天网球,你也许渴了吧?

dare作情态动词,作“敢”、“敢于”解,后跟不带to的不定式。主要用于疑问、否定、条件从句中。本单元课文中就有这样的句子:…I dare not sleep in that room again.我不敢再在那间房里睡觉了。再如:

She dare not go out by herself at night.她不敢夜里单独外出。

-Dare you go swimming in the sea?你敢去海里游泳吗?

-No,I dare not.不,我不敢去。

dare也可用作及物动词,后面的不定式多带to,也可以不带to。例如:

I didn’t dare to move.我不敢动。

And nobody would dare to ask,even my father.没有人敢问,甚至我父亲也不敢。

The children don’t dare make a sound while their parents are sleeping.孩子们在他们的父母睡觉时不敢出声。

6.There is no doubt about it.这是肯定无疑的。

doubt意为:怀疑,可以作名词和动词。在作名词时,后面常可接that引导的同位语从句,特别是在have no doubt和there is no doubt的结构中。例如:

I have no doubt that you will make great progress in your English.我毫不怀疑你的英语将有很大的进步。

There is no doubt that most boys enjoy playing football.绝大多数男孩都喜欢踢足球是毫无疑问的。

doubt在作动词时,后面可接宾语从句。如主句是肯定式,从句常用whether或if 引导;如主句是否定式及疑问式,从句常用that引导。例如:

I doubt whether/if it is true.我怀疑这事是否真实。

I don’t doubt that you are honest.我不怀疑你是诚实的。

如主句是肯定式,接that从句,则可以表示“恐怕……不会”。例如:

I doubt that John will come.恐怕约翰不会来了。

7.No doctor would have noticed the tiny teeth marks of the snake on your skin.没有一个医生能从你的皮肤上看出蛇咬的细小齿痕。

no doctor中的no相当于not any,可以和have,have got,there+be等连用。例如:

There is no hope.没有希望了。

He has got no home.他没有家。

no还可以和其他动词连用。例如:

It will really do you no harm at all.它真的对你无害。

Oh,it’s no trouble at all.噢,一点也不麻烦。

would have noticed是虚拟语气,表示与过去事实相反。全句可以理解为:

If the snake had bitten you,no doctor would have noticed the very small teeth marks on your skin.在表示与过去事实相反的虚拟句中,从句谓语采用had done形式;主句中谓语常使用Would+动词的完成式。
